Know more about your favorite off-road beast
Jeep Wranglers were equipped with air conditioning only after 1986 with the YJ model. The first such model had an optional A/C. You could either purchase a higher model with a pre-installed A/C or get yourself an aftermarket air conditioning kit. Also, all these air conditioning kits came with heating features for the winter months. Even today, you have the option to either buy the Jeep Wrangler with an air conditioning system or the one without it.
For any other car, it would only be absurd to not have air conditioning as an essential feature. But for a rough and tough adventurous giant like Jeep, it is quite understandable. So do Jeep Wranglers have air conditioning? The answer is yes. It is fairly your own choice.
Jeep Wranglers were not equipped with A/Cs at one time
The first Jeep Wrangler was made in 1940 and was meant to be only an army vehicle. Only in 1945, the CJ model was released for the general public. In 1986, the first Jeep Wrangler model was released with optional air conditioning. Today, some of the Jeep Wranglers have A/C and some don’t. It entirely depends on your choice. If you are a fan of a particular model of Jeep that does not come with an A/C, you may still have an option of getting one installed later.
Jeep Wrangler YJ has optional A/C
The archaic Jeep Wrangler YJ was manufactured between the years 1986 and 1995. The A/C was optional. You could either purchase a superior model with an already fitted A/c or get one installed later on. In case you are a classic stuff enthusiast, you may want to find one of these older models for yourself. So even if your antique beast doesn’t have an A/C, you can retrofit an aftermarket A/C system kit with ease.
However, all YJs had a standard heating option so that you wouldn’t suffer just as much in the winter months. One must note that instead of the standard R12 refrigerant, the Jeep Wrangler YJ requires an R134a refrigerant.
Jeep Wrangler TJ has standard A/C
Jeep Wrangler TJ was first introduced in 1997 and it kept being manufactured until 2006. The TJ model was fitted with AC as standard and there were vents for the driver and passenger side seat. Because there were no vents for those in the back seat, they had to depend on the circulation of air within the cabin.
Jeep Wrangler JK is always equipped with an A/C
The Jeep Wrangler JK was introduced in 2007 and it kept being manufactured until 2017. The air conditioning was standard but the vents were only located on the front. So while the driver and the front passenger could cool down, the rear passengers had to depend on the air circulation.
Jeep Wrangler JL does not come with a standard A/C
The Jeep Wrangler JL has different offerings with respect to the two-door and the three-door versions. The two-door version is not equipped with a standard A/C while the four-door version is equipped with one. While the quality of air conditioning in the JL is very much similar to that in the JK, the AC cabin tests have shown a difference of as much as 7 degrees Fahrenheit in the cooling mechanism of both these cars.
The air conditioning system in the JL is somewhat more superior to that in the JK. One must note that significant improvements have obviously been made in the JL air conditioning system. Furthermore, Jeep Wrangler JL has an option called Max AC that optimizes your air conditioning system to work at its coldest.
The only drawback is that the utilization of this extra function causes the cooling motor in the front to generate a lot of noise. Many JL owners complain about this disturbance.
Know about the air conditioning bypass Jeep Wrangler
The air conditioning bypass implies that the Jeep contains venting, wiring, and harness for the installation of an air conditioning system but the essential components of air conditioning are bypassed.
For example, the rugged and tough Jeep Wrangler YJ had the air conditioning installed in some cars while not in others.
Climate control is more or less an essential feature
No matter how rough you aspire to be on your gruesome adventures, the pleasures of off-roading are only enjoyable with a certain level of comfort. Any enhancement in troubling factors will only add to you misery.
If the weather is very cold, the heat in the cabin should be sufficient to keep you comfortable and protected from the bitterness of the winds. And in the peak summer months, an A/C keeps the cabin cool and protects you from getting roasted.
The air conditioning system inside every Jeep Wrangler is about similar
The heating and air conditioning systems inside Jeep Wranglers have relatively simple mechanisms. The desired air temperature is pumped throughout the ventilation system. The HVAC layout consists of a heater core, an A/C condenser, and a blower motor.
The heater core pumps heated air into the cabin
The function of the heater core is to pump heated air into the cabin of your Jeep Wrangler. When you turn on the heat, this system actually gathers heat from your car engine’s cooling system to then supply it to the cabin.
In its basic form, the heater core is much like a radiator in the engine of your Wrangler. The heated up cooling fluid from the cooling system runs through the core so that hot air is produced around it. This heated air is then sucked into the blower motor which eventually heats up your cabin.
The A/C condenser serves to effectively cool your cabin
The A/C condenser is present in the front portion of the engine of your Jeep Wrangler. The engine of this tough hulk is run by a pulley system. The compressor serves to condense the refrigerant in the system so that the compressed refrigerant is then sent to the condenser.
The boiling point of the condensed refrigerant is extremely low and it lets the condenser work in an exactly opposite manner. The condenser works by pulling heat out of the surrounding air to then boil the refrigerant. Like this, only cool air remains around it. This cool air is then cycled through the system of ventilation.
The blower motor provides motion to the air
The blower motor is an integral part of the climate control system. It’s purpose is to provide motion to the air so that it is cycled through the ventilation system. The speed of the blower can be regulated by the switches present on the dashboard.
There are dampers in the ventilation system that define the direction in which the air will be pushed. Whenever the switch is set at a particular speed, the motor is engaged to spin a fan that in turn cycles the air.
The maintenance of a Jeep Wrangler’s air conditioning system is essential
In the absence of an efficient heating and coolings system, the atmosphere in the car could get tiresome. There are numerous areas in an HVAC system where problems may arise.however, you can definitely guide yourself along the most common origins for these difficulties.
The heater core can be assessed by visual inspection
The heater core inside a vehicle doesn’t go bad as commonly. The deterioration of the eating system could signal at a leak or another problem in the innards of the cooling system. The heater core can be quickly assessed visually to determine whether it needs to be replaced.
The blower motor is susceptible to burning up
The blower motor of your Jeep Wrangler can burn up. When this happens, no air can be cycled through the air conditioning system. This problem demands replacement of the unit.
Inefficient dampers need replacement
Dampers serve to direct the air to particular areas of the vehicle. Inefficient functioning of the dampers demands their replacement.
Your A/C could also require recharging
It is important for your A/C to be properly charged in order to efficiently cool the air. In case your A/c has started to produce lesser cold air, maybe the problem lies in the charging.
R12 is a rather dangerous component
R12 is a relatively dangerous and obsolete component. Many users switch to the environment-friendly and non-flammable R134a. However, R132 a does not cool air as efficiently as R12. you would require an updated compressor to produce the same level of cooling.
Most Jeep Wranglers have an optional air conditioning system. This mainly goes with the rough and tough concept of the hulk personality a Wrangler carries. However, one does require a certain level of comfort to enjoy any adventure. It is possible for you to install an air conditioning unit in a Wrangler model that doesn’t come equipped with one.
